greek man, american woman

I have a problem. I am a modern american woman, fairly independent, who has been dating a mature greek man for about 5 months. the problem is, he always puts time with his family over seeing me,(he lives at home) and says that he cannot be a "rebel" son and not spend the appropriate time with his family. On holidays, he spends time with the family, and does not invite me to family parties. What is going on here? is there any cultural basis for this?
