Yes, I know about the cultural differences but really I think they are a nice extra (and you can learn alot from them!!) in a inter-cultural relationship! Ofcourse its not all roses, every relationship has it ups and downs!
And you already mentioned the fact that learning the language and culture will help you, really it does, wouldn't ik be great if you could communicate with his family?!
