Pronunciation of Ancient Greek

How much difference is there between modern and ancient Greek
pronunciation? I ask this because the way I was taught to pronounce
ancient Greek texts seems to differ in many ways from how modern Greek
is pronounced. At least my Greek friends always laugh at me
when I (try to) read Greek. Why do we learn a different
pronunciation, and which is closer to the way the ancients spoke?
