Venetia,
the recipe you are looking for goes as follows:

MILA PSITA
8 Lrg apples
9 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons brandy
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2-3 tablespoons butter
blanched almonds, broken in pieces

peel the apples and use a corer to remove the cores. Wash them and place them in a pot. Put a tablespoon of sugar in the cavity of each one. Add 1/2 cup water, the brandy and the lemon juice, and boil for 20 minutes. Place the apples in a baking dish and pour the liquid from the pot over them. put a little butter in a hot oven for a few minutes until they are golden brown.
