I wrote this poem in Greek and translated to English
to honor my Father's memory, Konstantinos N. Soutsos.

My Father's Lament
------------------

A proud bird flew to a far-off land
Thinking to find over there Paradise
Because he trusted a friend's untrue word

Where he went they spoke another tongue
The songs were incomprehensible and tasteless
Void of the passion for life and warm humanity

He struggled with all his strength to earn
Enough and to his land in a few years return
But his heartless fate other things had in store

The years passed and the dreams of the return
Became a sweet memory and an issue of discussion
Rooted in the unhappy land and fell in deep thought

His youngsters now pull in other directions
The call of the homeland for them is an alien concern
To master Homer's sweet tongue poses a great challenge

He misses the beauty of the homeland he left behind
With teary eyes and great sorrow he counts the time
Listening to ballads of Kazantzidis on an old vinyl record

Damned be the moment he opened his wings to fly away
His deep thoughts and unbearable pain seek a way to escape
But solution there is none and the time does not roll back…

Stylianos K. Soutsos

P.S. How can I post it in Greek?
