I believe 'petras' is derived from 'tis petras' which means 'of the rock'. The word 'rock' in Greek is 'i petra' (a feminine noun). The word 'petros' sounds like it could be the male name "Petros" which translates into the English version of 'Peter." It's my understanding that the word 'i petra' does not take on a masculine pronoun.
